Friday Random Ten - MIA Edition

I’m going to have to add my list later tonight. But, for those of you who’d like to play, here’s how you do it: put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. Leave your list in comments or trackbacks. If you click past the bad or embarrassing songs, you’ll be cursed with worse luck than a Republican in November. And you don’t want that!

Update: I’m back from a trip to Staten Island today. I don’t think I went there once during the five years I lived in New York City. That’s a shame — it’s a pretty interesting place.

Anyway, on to the Random Ten:

1. “Cars and Parties,” Edith Frost (Wonder Wonder)
2. “See America Right,” Mountain Goats (Tallahassee)
3. “Lay Lady Lay,” Bob Dylan (Nashville Skyline)
4. “In the Back Seat,” The Arcade Fire (Funeral)
5. “Long Time Comin’,” Bruce Springsteen (Devils & Dust)
6. “Kent,” Slint (Tweez)
7. “No Matter,” Cat Power (Dear Sir)
8. “Man-Size Sextet,” PJ Harvey (live, Festival de Paredes de Coura, 2003)
9. “Only One One and Only,” Gillian Welch (Revival)
10. “What’s the Word,” We Are Scientists (With Love and Squalor)

Favorite Song: “Lay Lady Lay,” but I want to throw “See America Right” in the mix, too. Hey!
Least Favorite Song: “No Matter”
Favorite Album: Nashville Skyline

What’s on your list?

OutOfContext:

I thought the title of the post meant we’d be seeing some Galang action…

1) Independence Day–Melanie C.–Bend It Like Beckham Soundtrack
2)Ta Theloune Ta Matia Sou–Kaiti Garbi–Apla Ta Pragmata
3)Stand In Line–The Flaming Lips–In A Priest Driven Ambulance
4)And She Was–Talking Heads–Little Creatures
5)Black and White World–Elvis Costello and the Attractions–Get Happy!
6)Grand Old Rag–Billy Murray–Nipper’s Greatest Hit’s 1901-1920
7)Who Makes You Feel–Dido–Life For Rent
8)Wicked Messenger–Patti Smith–Gone Again
9)Lost Angel–Heart–Jupiter’s Darling
10)Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean–Explosions In The Sky–The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

Favorite Song: Independence Day (Feeling poppy today)
Least Favorite: Who Makes You
Favorite Album: Get Happy!

Helmut:

1. Jim Guthrie - Ain’t Got No Life… (Nina Simone) (Comes With A Smile Vol. 12)
2. Radiomatic - Etonnez-moi Benoit (Ce Soir Apres, Nous Passerons Des Disques)
3. Buah - 7 Notas, 7 Colores (Hecho Es Simple)
4. Malajube - Le Metronome (Le Compte Complet)
5. Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi - O Didadao Do Mundo (Afrociberdelia)
6. Psapp - Dad’s Breakdown (Do Something Wrong EP)
7. Sweet Billy Pilgrim - God In the Details (EP)
8. Carrie - Sounds Like Display (Honey Blue Star)
9. Peeping Tom Feat. Norah Jones - Sucker (Peeping Tom)
10. Etta Baker - Near the Cross I Watch and Pray (One-Dime Blues)

Favorite - Tough. I like Nina Simone’s tune and Jim Guthrie does a nice job. Etta Baker tune here is simple and sweet. Chico Science was always a favorite, but this song less so. Radiomatic makes goo poppy French rock.

Least favorite - Psapp is really starting to grate on my nerves. Carrie is too far on the twee side.

Erleichda:

1. Khatwet Serena - Hossam Ramzy
2. Symphony No. 9 (Scherzo) - Beethoven
3. Beef5 (a soundbite from South Park)
4. Gregorian Spirit (”Smells Like Teen Spirit” sung as a Gregorian Chant)
5. Come Around - Markus James
6. I’m Leaving You (Commit a Crime) - Stevie Ray Vaughan
7. Assoul - Tinariwen
8. Heaven Knows - Robert Plant
9. Going to California - Led Zeppelin
10. Say What - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Favorite: As much as I love my Zeppelin, I think right now I’m leaning toward the Markus James track. West African music + blues = whoa!

Least Favorite: Um, the soundbite from South Park. I never listen to those things & forgot it was even on here until just now.

(Hi, by the way — I found your blog on Technorati & it looks interesting.)

Suzy Shedd:

Oh, Matt — surely you must remember Dave Barry’s wonderful column on the worst rock songs ever (here’s one place to find it): http://www.cs.umd.edu/~gasarch/HUMOR/worstsongs.html

And in searching for a link to it, I found one blog responder who opined that “Lay Lady Lay” sounded like, “Kermit the Frog trying to get Miss Piggy into bed.”

Matt:

Allmusic calls it a “a pleasing low croon,” but, yeah, I can hear some Kermit in there. Still, the steel guitar is great, and the fact that Dave Barry’s research assistant and I have different opinions of the song doesn’t bother me too much in the end.

So, where’s your list, Suzy?

Suzy Shedd:

Oh, how funny — you thought I actually OWNED an iPod. No, I’m afraid that will have to wait until I actually have a job for a while. In fact, I don’t even think I’ve ever seen one up close. Early adopter. Not.

Matt:

nah — I don’t own an iPod either. But I do use iTunes, which is free!
