Random quote from The Big Lebowski Random Quote Generator to get us in the mood:
Dude:Yeah, and you were–
Walter: You know this!
Dude: And you were divorced five fucking years ago.
Walter: Yeah? What do you think happens when you get divorced? You turn in your library card? Get a new driver’s license? Stop being Jewish?
On to the FRT. To play, put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. Leave your list in comments or trackbacks. If you click past the bad or embarrassing songs, you’d make a perfect Republican Speaker of the House.

2. “Wheels,” Flying Burrito Brothers (The Gilded Palace of Sin/Burrito Deluxe)
3. “Thunderwing,” T. Rex (The Slider)

hot. damn. That may be my favorite Random Ten, ever. Now comes the hard part:

Least Favorite Song: “Goodbye George” (only because we can’t say “goodbye” to George for two more years . . . unless . . . perhaps . . . )
Favorite Album: The Gilded Palace of Sin/Burrito Deluxe
What’s on your list?

Claire:
Nice random tens, to the both of you. I need to start remembering my ipod on Fridays to join in the fun.
Matt:
Thanks, Rod — and right back atcha. I need to check out Scott Walker — I don’t think I’ve heard anything by him, though it seems as if I should have.
Claire: post your list tonight or tomorrow. It’s all good.
Helmut:
Matt - check out the unique and nearly insane album “Tilt” by Scott Walker. It’s one of those records that creates its own category of music. Other than this his earlier numbered albums (”Scott Walker 3″ and “4,” for ex., are especially good).
Here’s my list.
1. The Magnetic Fields - The Things We Did and Didn’t Do
2. Shade Tree - Stupidest Thing
3. Carmen - Schlaraffenland
4. Brush - To Reiko
5. Superbus - Tchi-Cum-Bah
6. Arrial - I Predict a Quiet (Spanish Dub)
7. Cesaria Evora - Sodade
8. Four Tet - Pockets
9. Souvenir - Spring Rain
10. Dolphin Band - Telam
OutOfContext:
1-Wow and Flutter-Stereolab (ABC Music)
2-Ladder–Joan Osborne (Relish)
3-Hoarfrost–Sonic Youth (A Thousand Leaves)
4-Sweet Hitch-Hiker–Creedence Clearwater 5-Revival (Chronicle Vol. 1)
6-Mimi?…Speravo di trovarvi qui–Calas-Di Stifano (La Boheme)
7-My Resistance Is Low–Hoagy Charmichael (?)
8-Gloria–Van Morrison (Best of Van Morrison)
9-Waking the Witch–Kate Bush (Hounds of Love)
10-Mars–Television (Television)
Favorite: Much tougher this week than last…Wow and Flutter
Least Favorite: My Resistance is Low
Favorite Album: ABC Music
Matt–I love Mr. Beast, although “Rock Action” and “I Chose Horses” are my favorites. Were the free downloads by way of eMusic by chance? Between Napster to Go and eMusic, I find a lot of great stuff in a very affordable way.
Helmut–”Sodade” is a great song…
Rod:
Scott Walker is unclassifiably great, and his records become less frequent and inexorably weirder as his career progresses. If you start with the numbered ones, 1, 2, 3, and 4, and then move through Climate of Hunter and Tilt to the most recent one, The Drift, you’ll wonder how on earth you got there. I found The Drift very hard work, but the first four are just lovely. And who writes a pop song about The Seventh Seal? Scott does:
Anybody seen a Knight pass this way?
I saw him playing chess with Death yesterday
His crusade was a search for God and they say
It’s been a long way to carry on
Trust me, it sounds a lot better than it reads. It really does.
