Friday Random Ten: From the Margins Edition

This edition of the Friday Random Ten is dedicated to margins of all kinds: musical, cultural, and, textual. Textual margins (in the most basic, literal sense) are foremost on my mind today as I format my dissertation for deposit.

As usual, here’s some random dialogue from The Big Lebowski Random Quote Generator to get us in the proper mood:

Walter: Huh? No! What the fuck are you talking–I’m not–we’re talking about unchecked aggression here –
Donny: What the fuck is he talking about?
Dude: My rug.
Walter: Forget it, Donny. You’re out of your element.

Thankfully, “What the fuck are you talking about?” is one question that did not come up at my dissertation defense last week.

Anyway, on to the Random Ten. To play, put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. Leave your list in comments or trackbacks. If you click past the bad or embarrassing songs, I’m going to make you reformat my dissertation (and, trust me, you don’t want to have to do that).

Here’s my list:

1. “I Shall Be Released,” Nina Simone (Blue For You)
2. “Requiem,” King Crimson (Beat)
3. “The Nurse,” The White Stripes (Get Behind Me Satan)
4. “Screwville, USA,” Spank Rock (YoYoYoYoYo)
5. “Firefly,” Ida (Will You Find Me)
6. “Only a Rose,” Geraint Watkins (Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour)
7. “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fail,” Bob Dylan (The Bootleg Series, Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert at Philharmonic Hall)
8. “An Architect’s Dream,” Kate Bush (Aerial)
9. “Mountaineer’s Courtship,” Ernest Stoneman and Hattie Stoneman (Anthology of American Folk Music)
10. “Chase the Devil,” Max Romeo (Arkology)

Favorite Song: “I Shall Be Released” (”Screwville, USA” runs a surprising second)
Least Favorite Song: “Requiem”
Favorite Album: tough call, as always, but I’ll go with Arkology

Finally, I’m not going to quote the words of Donny or Walter in the comment section of this Cornell Daily Sun review of Bob Dylan’s new album, but it sure is tempting.

Rod:

Man, that Dylan review is way off. There’s so much wrong with it I don’t know where to start, so I won’t even try.

I love this Random Ten:

01. There For You - Leonard Cohen (Dear Heather)
02. Seasons of Love - Blaze (Mix The Vibe: Joe Claussell)
03: King Off - Isolee (Western Shore)
04: Groovy Times - The Clash (Super Black Market Clash)
05: Well, You Needn’t - Thelonious Monk (Genius of Modern Music, Volume 1)
06: Fruta Vermelha - Apollo Nove (Res Inexplicata Volans)
07: I Threw It All Away - Bob Dylan (Almost Went To See Elvis Bootleg)
08: Who Will The Next Fool Be - Charlie Rich (The Complete Sun Singles)
09: Storm Returns - Prefuse 73 (One Word Extinguisher)
10: Stairway To The Stars -Johnny Mathis (Johnny Mathis: A Personal Collection)

Favorite Song: Stairway To The Stars

Least Favorite Song: I would say Groovy Times, but it’s The Clash, so it has to be Who Will The Next Fool Be by Charlie Rich.

Favorite Album: Johnny Mathis: A Personal Collection. LOVE Johnny Mathis.

Bonus: Track 11 was Last One Standing by Neil Finn from Try Whistling This, a great song from a great album.

I think this Random Ten/Eleven would make a really good mix. I’m going to try it.

Curtis:

1. The Cramps - The Crusher
2. Gilberto Gil - Oslodum
3. The Grays - Same Thing
4. The Smiths - London
5. Throwing Muses - Serene
6. The Smiths - Girl Afraid
7. John Mayer - Wheel
8. Camper Van Beethoven - ZZ Top Goes To Egypt
9. The Replacements - Left of The Dial
10. Cracker - Wedding Day

Favorite Song: Wheel
Least: ZZ Top Goes To Egypt
Best Album: Limbo

This week’s a little mediocre. Really like that John Mayer tune.

I had some Throwing Muses albums before Limbo, but for some reason it wasn’t until I listened to it that I realized how good they were — then all their albums turned golden.
