Friday Random Ten — Eyeball to Eyeball Edition

Random Quote from The Big Lebowski Random Quote Generator to get us in the mood:

Walter: Were you listening to the Dude’s story?
Walter: Sure you’ll see some tank battles. But fighting in the desert is very different from fighting in canopy jungle.
Dude: Uh-huh.
Walter: I mean ‘Nam was a foot soldier’s war whereas, uh, this thing should be a fucking cakewalk. I mean I had an M16, Jacko, not an Abrams fucking tank. Just me and Charlie, man, eyeball to eyeball.

On to the FRT. To play, put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. Leave your list in comments or trackbacks. If you click past the bad or embarrassing songs, I’m gonna make you watch Electric Company videos until you’ve straightened yourself out.

Here’s my list:

1. “Something Extra,” Roky Erikson (Never Say Goodbye)
2. “Ecstasy,” PJ Harvey (4-Track Demos)
3. “Children’s Story,” Slick Rick (The Great Adventures of Slick Rick)
4. “You’ve Changed,” Billie Holiday (Fine & Mellow)
5. “Good Boy,” Big Bill Broonzy (Whiskey and Good Time Blues)

3. Page France - Talking Out-Louds
4. Hanne Hukkelberg - Balloon
5. Palestrina - Missa Papae Marcelli: Agnus Dei 2

7. Annie Philippe - Pour qui, pour quoi
8. elodieO - La mer

Matt:

Nice list, Helmut. I don’t know most of those groups . . . but I did see The Coup at the concert following last year’s Cindy Sheehan March for Peace in Washington, and they were great. Interesting story, too, about that album cover.

Rod:

1. I Believe In You - Talk Talk (Spirit of Eden)
2. Do You Remember The Riots (Orchestral Version) - Jens Lekman (At The Department of Forgotten Songs)
3. Nipple To The Bottle - Grace Jones (Living My Life)
4. 16, Maybe Less - Iron & Wine/Calexico (All Songs Considered Download)
5. West Pier Getdown - Quantic Soul Orchestra (Pushin’ On)
6. Tumbling Walls Buried Me In The Debris With ESG - Liars (They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top)
7. The Village - New Order (Power, Corruption & Lies)
8. Wrapped Around (Vetran Remix) - Crush 22 (Download)
9. Those Pockets Are People - Electrelane (Axes)
10. Corn Fish Dub - The Upsetters (Arkology)

I’m very happy with this. I love all of it, so no least favorite; it just wouldn’t be fair.

Favorite Song: Do You Remember The Riots
Favorite Album: Well, if we’re playing Desert Island Discs, then I’m going to cheat and say Arkology so I get to take the whole box set. If we’re being strict constructionist about it, then I guess I’ll take either Power, Corruption and Lies or Axes.

Retired Catholic:

Nothing to Say-Jethro Tull “Benefit”.
Green Grass and High Tides-Best of the Outlaws.
Sweet Surrender-Tim Buckley “Greetings from LA”
Blues Power-Albert King “Blue Power”
A love Supreme-John Coltrane “A Love Supreme”
Bird on a Wire-Joe Cocker “Joe Cocker!”
“The Koln Concert”-Keith Jarrett.
“The Devil’s Trill”-Tartini
Mona-The Rolling Stones “The Rolling Stones”
“Sing, Sing, Sing”-Woody Herman

Martin:

1. Railroad Jerk, “Sweet Librarian”
2. The Undertones, “You’ve Got My Number (Why Don’t You Use It)”
3. The English Beat, “Save It For Later”
4. Okkervil River, “For Real
5. The Hives, “Well, Well, Well”
6. Young and Sexy, “The City You Live In Is Ugly”
7. Franz Ferdinand, “The Dark of the Matinee”
8. Donald Fagen, “New Frontier”
9. Wire, “Ex Lion Tamer”
10. Jens Lekman, “Black Cab”

I can’t pick my favorite track here. The strongest random 10 I’ve posted, by far.

Helmut:

Oops, I forgot to do the favorites, Matt. Probably the Juana Molina and the Hanne Hukkelberg. These are both very lovely and interesting songs. They’re circulating among the mp3 blogs. I suggest finding them.

These lists are interesting, but I find them a bit strange since I like listening to vinyl and so have an ecelectic and mostly contemporary mp3 collection. Very little of the older music (as well as much of the newer) that I listen to are on my computer - mp3s take up too much space… like records. Sigh. They all sit and gaze at each other across the technology gap.

Matt:

Rod, Retired Catholic, Martin: great lists, all. Seriously, your lists makes me want to pull people aside on the street and tell them about the wonderfully eclectic musical tastes of the people who visit this site.

Helmut, next week you should do an analogue random ten: go to your record shelves, close your eyes, and pick out a record at random. Then, find the track listing and pick out a random track. Voila!
