Mark, of the liberal blog Thou Shall Not Suck!, recently had back surgery. Among the people he asked to guest blog for him while he recuperated was his dad — who is a Republican.
Mark’s father is not your garden-variety conservative — in fact, after reading the guest post he wrote, in which he calls for the legalization of prostitution and marijuana, and brags about the time he “saw a donkey show in Puerto Rico” (among other exploits), some would have trouble calling him conservative at all.
Still, his father put forward enough Bush-related propaganda that Mark could not help but respond.
In doing so, he has helped create an example of father-son political dialogue that is as touching as it is funny. I’m not sure why — maybe it’s because my own father is a Republican; maybe it’s because it is so rare, these days, to see real dialogue take place between those holding opposing political views — but I loved reading this exchange.
Who said the internets couldn’t bring people together?

Holy crap … I literally laughed out loud at the picture (I even woke up The Boy doing so).
While my dad does have Republican tendencies, I’m starting to see him more as a moderate. He served in the Navy, thus he tends to think Repubs have a stronger stance on the military, but 90% of what he believes is actually more toward the left.
What’s strange is that he and I never really discussed politics until I started my blog. Since then I’ve learned a lot about him, and it’s actually brought us closer together, even though we disagree on some stuff.
Kinda strange …
