Judiciary Committee Approves Roberts

The Judiciary Committee has approved the nomination of John Roberts for Chief Justice by a 13-5 vote.

The news comes via Crooks and Liars; The New York Times has further details.

Among those voting “yea” on Roberts was the great progressive hope, Russ Feingold. Progressive Patriot, my ass.

Color me dumbfounded, disappointed, and utterly disillusioned. Say it ain’t so, Russ.

Props to Senators Dianne Feinstein, Edward Kennedy, Joseph Biden, Charles Schumer, and Richard Durbin for refusing to confirm a nominee who had provided only the sketchiest sense of where he stands on the issues.

And jeers to Pat Leahy, Russ Feingold, and Herb Kohl for refusing to stand strong when their country, and their party, needed them most.

With friends like these, who needs enemies?

JLo:

Might there have been some more strategic motive there? I don’t have any gueses, by the way, I’m just inclined to ask questions like that. Biden in particular usually draws the ire of progressives, so his place in the “no” crowd strokes my curiosity.

Matt:

2008 seems to be behind Feingold and Biden’s votes — one moving center, one moving left. Both moving nowhere in the long run.
