Friday Cat Blogging: The Hunter and Her Prey
Posted By Matt On 26th August 2005 @ 07:30 In Cat Blogging | 2 Comments
The other night, I saw something jump out of the corner of my eye. A cricket had found its way into my kitchen. Luna followed my gaze, tensed, and pounced on it.
A more humane person than I would have pulled her away, scooped up the bug, and carried it outside to freedom.
I ran to get my camera.
She caught the cricket under her paw and put it in her mouth. She looked around with wild, wide eyes, searching for a good spot to let it go again. In the living room, she released it and watched it hop away.
She lunged and caught it a second time, and again let it go.
Then, a curious thing happened: the cricket skipped under the couch before she could stop it. Luna spent the whole night waiting for it to reemerge. As far as I know, it never did.
Score one for the little guys.

A cricket is not so bad - Our kitty, Smoke, once brought a live (slightly damaged) chipmunk inside to play with. The chipmunk scurried from hiding place to hiding place, chased by three cats, two adults, and two children. To keep the amusement levels high, Smoke would catch it periodically and let it go.
