Friday Random Ten

Put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up (you must resist the temptation to click past the bad or embarrassing songs) in comments and trackbacks.

Here’s my list:

1. “Hands” — The Kills
2. “Saint Simon” — The Shins
3. “Per Second Second” — The Wrens
4. “Radio War” — Iron and Wine
5. “Miserific Condition” — Unwound
6. “The King’s Weed” — !!!
7. “Living for the City” — Stevie Wonder
8. “Keep on the Sunny Side” — The Whites
9. “Make You Feel My Love” — Bob Dylan
10. “Down There By the Train” — Johnny Cash

Choosing favorites among the songs and albums on this list is pretty difficult. . . but I do have to choose, so:

Song I like Most: “Living for the City”
Song I like Least: “Miserific Condition”
Favorite Album on this List: American Recordings

What’s on your list? And how would your answers to those last three questions differ from mine?

Mark:

Deep Forest — Sweet Lullaby (ambient mix)
Foo Fighters — Learn to Fly
Blind Melon — I Wonder
The Clash — Clampdown
Marvin Gaye — Ain’t That Peculiar
London Symphony Orchestra — Passage
Rage Against the Machine — Without a Face
Miles Davis — Well, You Needn’t
Blind Melon — Seed to a Tree
Beverly Hills — Weezer

Song I like most — since it’s raining today, Blind Melon’s “I Wonder” really seemed to fit.
Song I like least — That’s a hard one, but “Beverly Hills” from weezer. Still a good song, but my least fav from those.
Album I like most — Evil Empre from Rage. Not a bad song on that one.

Rod:

My iTunes shuffle function is very annoying. It will often include multiple songs by the same artist in any given shuffle, regardless of how big the library is. So I had to shuffle until I got ten different people. I hope that isn’t considered cheating.

1. Fortress/Deer Park - The Fall
2. Sun in My Morning - Saint Etienne
3. Harpo en Su Harpo - Jonathan Richman
4. Details of the War - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
5. Bam Thwok - Pixies
6. Boy Child - Scott Walker
7. Dear Mr. Bush, There Are Over 100 Words for Shit and Only 1 for Music, Fuck You, Out Hud - Out Hud
8. Guns of Brixton - Nouvelle Vague
9. You Don’t - Tricky
10. Out of Egypt, Into the Great Laugh of Mankind, And I Shake the Dirt from My Sandals As I Run - Sufjan Stevens

Song I Like Most - Boy Child
Song I LIke Least - You Don’t
Album I Like Most - Very tough decision. Probably Scott 4, by Scott Walker, although Hex Enduction Hour by The Fall is right up there with it. ‘Cause I’m livin’ in the past.

Agitprop: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Propaganda:

I Shuffle Therefore I Am

Relevant History details the virtues of utilizing the shuffle feature on one’s iPod. I happen to think that the shuffle feature is rigged. Why are some songs more likely to pop up than others? Is there some sort of ranking?

J.A.S.O.N.:

1. Dust in the wind - Kansas
2. Race car Ya-Yas - Cake
3. Death Day - Alien Ant Farm
4. Home - Collective Soul
5. Cure - Metallica
6. Because of you - Nickelback
7. White wedding - Billy Idol
8. No place like home - Sneaker Pimps
9. six underground - Sneaker Pimps
10. Devil’s Dance - Metallica

Kate:

1. Alma-Ville — Vince Guaraldi Trio
2. Inoculated City — The Clash
3. Honeysuckle Rose — Louis Armstrong
4. Misty — Ella Fitzgerald
5. Whatever Makes You Happy — Paul Westerberg
6. Na Baixa Do Sapateiro — Gal Costa
7. Saint Simon — The Shins (ha Matt! My ipod chose it too!!!)
8. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee — Buffy Saint-Marie
9. Lines Around Your Eyes — Lucinda Williams
10. Ali’s Here — Ali Farka Toure

No idea why it was so heavy on the jazz this morning…go figure.

Song I like most: Misty, at least today. Perhaps my ipod knew I was in the mood for Ella and her brothers!

Song I like least: Whatever Makes You Happy. I love Paul, but this is not his best song.

Best record out of these: Between the Clash and Buffy. Coincidence and Likely Stories is a great record. I like them all, though. That’s why they’re on the ‘pod!

Have a great weekend everyone –

Good to see I’m not the only musically bi-polar person out there.
