The Right-Wing War Against Gay Men With Headaches

Posted By Matt On 29th July 2005 @ 01:21 In Politics, Science & Health | 6 Comments

This ridiculous story passed under my radar (so to speak) when it came out a few weeks ago, but Susie brings it to our attention. From GFN.com:

NGLCC co-founder Justin Nelson put the religious right on notice that the recent uproar surrounding the marketing of Tylenol PM to the LGBT community would backfire and that religious conservative interest groups have reached a new level of ignorance and intolerance. “I didn’t know headaches were only a straight thing,” Nelson said tongue-in-cheek about the latest tirade from the American Family Association (AFA).

Nelson’s comments came in response to a recent campaign launched by the AFA to pressure Johnson Johnson, makers of Tylenol PM, to stop advertising to and supporting the LGBT community. “Perhaps the weather is different on their planet, but here on Earth and in America, businesses exist to sell products and services to a wide variety of constituencies that will positively impact the bottom line of the company,” said Nelson.

Upon reading this news, you may wonder what, in God’s name, these religious wingnuts are so worked up about. Johnson & Johnson marketing Tylenol PM to gay men? Don’t we have more important things to be worried about, like the Global War on Terrorism Global War Against Violent Extremism?

[read on to see startling evidence of The Free Republic’s interest in buttpirate felching!]

Be that as it may, our perceptive, God-fearing friends at Focus on Family realized that Johnson and Johnson’s efforts to market its products to consumers was not an effort to increase sales. Rather, it was a dastardly attempt to — gasp — promote homosexuality!

So says Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute, who spewed forth this belief through the prodigious organ of Focus on Family :

Johnson & Johnson will be advertising its brand, Tylenol PM, in the July 19 issue of The Advocate, a leading gay magazine.

The ad shows two shirtless men in bed side by side. The text over one reads: “His backache is keeping him up.” Over the other: “His boyfriend’s backache is keeping him up.”

Johnson & Johnson has been advertising in gay media since 1996. Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute, said people need to take notice.

“A lot of corporate America has bought into the idea that they can secretly promote homosexuality without their consumers noticing out there,” he said.

My God, man! Can it be? Is there no decency anymore?!

Apparently not. Our wingnut freeper friends caught on, and they’re outraged!

You will not believe this ad by Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson has placed an ad for its Tylenol PM product in the July 19 issue of The Advocate, the nation’s leading homosexual magazine.

The ad shows two shirtless men in bed side by side. The text over one reads: “His backache is keeping him up.” Over the other: “His boyfriend’s backache is keeping him up.”

Given that “Be warned, it is offensive” admonition, one has to wonder about the curious collection of keywords that appears right under the author’s signature:

Is it just me, or do those keywords betray a startling intimacy with the very “alternate lifestyle” Mr. Wildmon critiques?

Those flaming, felching freepers were playing us the entire time. No Tylenol PM for them!

That’s the Global *Struggle* Against Violent Extremism, G.SAVE, geddit? As opposed to G.WOT, which isn’t nearly as fuzzy.

I saw this yesterday and, in my email of support to J & J (and my post), I had to ask what the AFA/FoF folks were doing reading a gay magazine. The more I think of it the more I think they could spin it as proof of the evils of homosexuality in that those boys get backaches that keep them awake all night. I can see the tag line for the campaign now: “No ‘mo backaches” - stay on the staright and narrow and you’ll be just fine.

of course the ads promote homosexuality. the only reason all of us don’t turn gay is because we can do something when we get headaches, they can’t. hell, that’s why i’m still straight.

once the public realizes that they can be gay AND take over-the-counter medication for headaches, what’s to stop them from running off with some hot gay lover?

Evidently, pain is part of GOD’S PLAN for gays (for straights, a minor inconvenience curable by drugs). I’m with ol cranky, though — WHAT are Don Wildmon, et al doing reading “the Advocate”? Must be the magazine they lust to hate — uh, hate to lust — oops…

Heh, heh.

This post and comments are hilarious! Glad I was able to check in today…

I had no idea FreeperLand had categories for those things. Glad to see that they are keeping on top of things.

Did I once hear that those idiots were for “free markets?” Like state’s rights and such, only when it suits them, I guess.
