Downing Street Memo Hearings: Today is the Day

It looks like Congressman Conyers played chess with the cards he was dealt, and managed to move The Downing Street Memo hearings back into the Capitol building. The hearings will take place today from 2:30-4:30, and will be broadcast live on C-SPAN 3 (watch the streaming video on the C-SPAN website).

After the hearings, Congressman Conyers will deliver his letter about the Memo to President Bush. Over 100 members of Congress and over half a million American citizens have co-signed this letter (pdf).

Here are the simple questions that Conyers asks President Bush:

1. Do you or anyone in your Administration dispute the accuracy of the leaked document?

2. Were arrangements being made, including the recruitment of allies, before you sought Congressional authorization [to] go to war? Did you or anyone in your Administration obtain Britain’s commitment to invade prior to this time?

3. Was there an effort to create an ultimatum about weapons inspectors in order to help with the justification for the war as the minutes indicate?

4. At what point in time did you and Prime Minister Blair first agree it was necessary to invade Iraq?

5. Was there a coordinated effort with the U.S. intelligence community and/or British officials to “fix” the intelligence and facts around the policy as the leaked document states?

We will not rest until these reasonable questions have been answered. The soldiers who have put their lives at risk for their country deserve nothing less than full and honest answers about the decisions that led to their deployment.

So far so good! I think the forum rehashed alot but the past events are relevant to the proceedings. Sad that some of our leaders don’t feel it’s important. We’re not going away!
