Matt:

Well, Martin, I’ve heard of the Pixies, at least ;)

I have to love a band that writes a song about Joseph Cotten (who starred in the greatest movie ever made, “The Third Man”). I’ll have to check them out.

I’m still struggling with this Random Ten thing. I think it’s cool to get a random ten, but I’m wondering whether we should make it an annotated random ten. Because part of the beauty of the random ten is hearing about new music you might not have already heard. It would be interesting to hear what people think of songs on their lists.

Of course, a full annotation would be too much of a pain in the arse. Maybe everyone could add two notes to their lists:

* Favorite Song of the Ten
* Most Embarrassing Song of the Ten

Anyone have other/better questions?

Martin:

Hell, I hadn’t heard… maybe four of those songs myself. I download a ton of stuff, and it takes me forever to sift through it. Those songs were good, overall — surprisingly so.

Here are some comments:
The second one is a twangy bluegrass cover version of the ABBA song — and it’s pretty much awesome — that’s one of the ones I hadn’t heard.

Ten in the Swear Jar became Xiu Xiu later on, kind of druggy indie rock.

FM Knives is peppy punkish rock out of Sacramento, kind of Buzzcocks-y. Good stuff.

The Black Lipstick is very good, sort of VU-ish, I like them a lot but — avoid the new album. The first EP and full-length are where it’s at.
