A fun meme . . . as Rox Populi describes it, “Fire up your player. Set to random play. List the first ten songs.”
Here’s mine:
1. New Order, “The Beach” (Substance)
2. Stars, “Tonight” (Nightsongs)
3. Rufus Wainwright, “Beautiful Child” (Want One)
4. LCD Soundsystem, “On Repeat” (LCD Soundsystem)
5. Dilated Peoples, “Live on Stage” (Expansion Team)
6. Joni Mitchell, “Carey” (Blue)
7. Sonic Youth, “Marilyn Moore” (Evol)
8. John Denver, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” (The Best of John Denver)
9. John Hartford, “Indian War Whoop” (O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack)
10. Badly Drawn Boy, “This is That New Song” (One Plus One is One)
Now do your own and report back. And remember — no cheatin’!

I dunno. I do it again — not with iTunes’ Party Shuffle nonsense — and get this. A much better crossection, I’d say.

I love these lists…especially when the John Denvers, Cars, and Rosemary Clooneys show up amid the indie gems.
Any thoughts for throwing some curveballs into this meme? I’ve been trying to think of something — like having everyone start with the same song, or choosing random plays by artists whose names start with the same letters or something — but I guess that in pure randomness lies the brilliance of the meme.
Dave:
Has anyone ever done a mix-tape club? I just got done doing one with people from college. It worked out pretty well.
Each person takes a turn making a mix CD with whatever songs they want. They send it out to everyone by mail. The next person takes their turn, and so on. So you end up making one disc, and getting X number of mixes sent to you.
The more diverse the crowd the better — it can be a monthly, or bi-weekly thing.
Matt:
I’ve never done it, Dave, but I LOVE the idea.

I belong to a mixtape club currently. It’s fun. It works a little differently from what Dave describes. In my case, I get emailed someone’s name and address every month, and I have to send them a mix. Some other person gets my name and address and they have to send me a mix. You don’t know who you’re going to get, or what you’re going to get. It’s become so big now that the owner has developed a web-based assignment generator and my last two mixes ended up going to Aberdeen and Belgium. I think the reason for its burgeoning popularity is that the project was featured in a piece on Stylus:

But it’s fun. I recommend it.
Rod:
Oh, by the way, is the main topic of this thread an Ipod thing? I’m kind of behind on the technology. Some friends of mine swapped Ipods on Saturday night and I watched them dance maniacally to each other’s playlists for half an hour (they were drunk, obviously). It was weird. I felt like I was in some kind of naughty club. Didn’t really make me want to buy an Ipod, though. It seemed kind of atomizing. You can just call me Oscar the Grouch.
Dave:
I like the international tape club idea. What kind of stuff have you gotten from it, Rod?
Rod:
well, i have to be honest and say that it really varies. i’ve had tapes from festivals, mixes of songs that are kind of secret shame songs, or guilty pleasures, themed mixes about the west coast and massachusetts, just straight-up indie mixes, seasonal mixes, you name it, really. people go to great lengths with the packaging, too, which is nice.
i really like making them. i’ve made a huge variety of different kinds of mixes over the years, dub, heavy emotional concept mixes, light and fluffy springtime fare, single band spotlights, covers mixes (the last mix i sent out consisted entirely of jazz pianist brad mehldau covering radiohead, which was a pretty high concept enterprise). and i try as often as possible to include a song by the fall, who are just magnificent and terribly underrated, so i try to spread their gospel as widely as i can.
i’m happy to post some of my tracklists here if anyone is interested.
working right now on the june mix, which might well consist of some upskis for the summer season.
Jeff:
