Today is a day of action for a group of Philly bloggers who support Seth Williams in his May 17 bid to unseat incumbent District Attorney Lynne Abraham.
As Karl and I outlined in an endorsement on Philly Future, there are several compelling reasons to vote for Seth Williams. Foremost among them are his plans to restructure the D.A.’s office on a community model, and his attention to gun violence.
He has received an endorsement from the Fraternal Order of Police. An article on that endorsement in Philadelphia Weekly highlights the importance of that backing:
Williams says a third of gun cases and half of all felony cases get thrown out of preliminary court because prosecutors aren’t prepared.
The FOP picked Williams based on his plan for community-based prosecution to handle the city’s 70,000 annual criminal cases. Under this method, already employed in Atlanta and Chicago, assistant district attorneys handle cases geographically, by neighborhood or police district. They also work directly with residents, community groups and police to address specific quality-of-life issues. Williams says the streamlined approach means fewer cases tossed out of court.
“Just that type of thinking alone, to do something different, is worth trying,” says FOP chief of staff Eugene Blagmond, expressing concern for the high percentage of felony arrests dismissed from court. “Victims of crime should feel they can get justice. Police officers should feel if they arrest someone, that person will be brought to justice. Right now the system just doesn’t work.”
It’s time for a change, which is why I am pledging my vote for Seth.
If you live in Philadelphia, please take some time to read up on this race, and to explore Seth Williams’ positions.

The community DA project is absolutely an awesome selling point for Seth. He really knows what he’s talking about when he gets into a discussion about that. And, I might add that this idea is quite unique for an east-coast DA candidate! I too am totally on Seth’s side, and will probably donate time/cash that way soon.
